The Best Breakfast for Effortless Weight Loss
What’s the best breakfast for losing weight and keeping healthy? Chances are, you are not thinking of greasy bacon and eggs! After all, why would you? Wholegrain cereals and bread, low fat yoghurt, fruit, fresh squeezed juices and green fruit smoothies have long been touted as the healthy breakfast options. But lets shake up that thinking – it could be the difference between losing body fat effortlessly and continuing to struggle with weight and constant food cravings!
Consider this. The one thing these so-called “healthy breakfast” foods all have in common is that they elevate blood sugar like nobody’s business (even the wholegrain bread). Of course, it is true that a piece of whole fruit is superior to a bowl of something just plain crazy – I’m thinking ultra-refined Kellogg’s Special K sprinkled with dried (read: sugarfied) cranberries and low fat milk. But either way, eating these types of foods for breakfast gets us jacked up on sugar and carbs early in the day.
Have you ever felt that eating breakfast makes you more hungry than if you had skipped it? It’s pretty common, as sugar and carbs spike insulin levels high and leave us prone to the big sugar crash, leaving us hungry again in as little as 1 – 2 hours. Once we’re on this roller coaster, it can be hard to maintain stable energy levels and resist food cravings throughout the day. Boo.
Are you a Sugar Burner?
If you truly identify with the Snickers slogan “You’re not you when you’re hungry” – watch out, this may be you!*
Struggling with energy levels and feeling hungry for snacks every couple of hours is pretty common, and you might think that’s just life. I did. But these are actually strong signs you’re a “Sugar Burner”. This means that your body has become well adapted to burning sugar, or foods that readily break down into sugar (carbohydrates), as its main fuel. In order to function, your body demands a constant supply of sugar and carbs.
Being a Sugar Burner can make you feel like you have a crazy split personality. If you’re without food for as little as a couple of hours, it can spell disaster for you and those around you. Without constant access to snacks and pick-me-ups, you get hangry. And it’s not much fun. I remember constantly struggling with feeling faint and very irritable anytime I was caught without a snack to get me by. It made simple things like going shopping or attending events quite stressful if I hadn’t come prepared, but then again I thought there was nothing I could do about it…
Be a Fat Burner!
If you’ve ever heard that the body and brain can only run on glucose, well that’s simply (and gladly) not true. Just like our bodies can adapt to burn sugar, we can adapt to burn fat in the absence of glucose. This fat adapted state is called ketosis, and refers to the body’s use of ketones (a byproduct of fat metabolism in the liver) for fuel. High octane fuel, no less, as recent studies show that the brain actually performs better using ketones rather than glucose as its energy source.¹ Now having said that, reaching and maintaining full ketosis is quite difficult and isn’t right for everybody, but we can use states of mild ketosis to our advantage.
So…what does bacon and eggs have to do with this?
In the morning, we should be in a state of mild ketosis as we haven’t eaten since dinner. Eating a breakfast that is high in fat will prolong this fat burning state, whereas a carby breakfast will supply the glucose to kick you straight out of ketosis.
Now I’m not sure about you but, I want my breakfast to encourage my body to mobilise stored fat, kill food cravings and keep my Sugar Burning alter-ego at bay. Any high fat breakfast which eliminates carbs will do the trick. For me, this is bacon (always sow-stall free) and eggs.
Give it a try. Over time, taking advantage of this fat adapted state in the morning can completely change the rhythm of your appetite throughout the day. Hangry episodes will fall to an all-time low, and you’ll feel satisfied for so much longer. In my experience, you won’t be relying on cast-iron willpower to avoid pieces of cake and other junk that’s on offer – you just won’t want it anymore. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
And aside from the slimming benefits, with your mind free from pondering your next snack or craving you’ll also feel more clear-headed and functional than ever. Promotion, anyone?
*And no, a Snickers bar is not the answer to stopping the hangries! This massive sugar hit will be sure to keep you on the sugar-craving-crash wheel!
