How to Rescue a Bad Day
We all have those days where, despite our best intentions, things start to head south.
Personally I know that sometimes, my day just starts off bad. It can be a real bummer to start the day on the back of a bad night’s sleep, or even worse sleep straight through the alarm! Food related accidents are are not welcome in the morning, for example dropping a carton of eggs on the floor!
On other days, while nothing truly “bad” happens, somehow the day gets hijacked. The hijacker could be a bad mood, a lack of motivation or just a tendency to procrastinate away the hours on YouTube. These are the days where I hit 3pm and hardly know where the day has gone!
In the past, I’d say my general response to those hijacked days would be to wrap myself up in guilt, turn on Netflix and promise myself a better day tomorrow. And while there’s nothing necessarily bad about a “do nothing” day, I’ve found a simple mantra that’s helped me shift my attitude and stay away from that mid-afternoon despair (or any time of day it might pop up!).

Today Isn’t Over Yet
Yep – it’s that simple! I actually heard this tip on Jess Lively’s podcast (this episode I believe) a couple of months back, and it really stuck with me. I recommend you check it if you’re interested in this topic.
The idea behind the mantra is just that – today isn’t over yet. Whether it’s 3pm and the house is a mess, or it’s 7pm and you didn’t do a productive thing all day, there are still positive things you can do. Despite that negative voice in your head that says all is lost (how dramatic!), there is still time!
By finding just one or two positive actions, we can start to shift our momentum back towards more positive vibes, or at least experience more happiness with what’s left of the day. The actions don’t have to be big, or necessarily “productive”. For example, it could be a small task that’s been hanging over your head, or it could be doing something for yourself that your really enjoy.
Here are a few ideas to try:
- Today isn’t over yet…I can still get to the gym for a class
- Today isn’t over yet…I can still make my favourite meal
- Today isn’t over yet…I can still knock over one of those niggling tasks (like paying some bills)
- Today isn’t over yet…I can still do a face mask and take a bath
- Today isn’t over yet…I can still call my friend for a good chat.
I hope you find this idea helpful, and I’d love to know your tips for rescuing a bad day!
